Recently, the English MOOC “An Understanding on Traditional Chinese Medicine” of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ZCMU) was officially launched on the Smart Education of China platform (https://csmartedu.cn). Now open to a global audience, the course provides a valuable opportunity for learners and enthusiasts worldwide to explore the culture of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and systematically acquire TCM knowledge.

Developed in 2020 on the Wisdom Tree (Zhihuishu) platform, the course centers around three core questions: “What is TCM,” “How to make diagnosis by means of TCM,” and “How to treat diseases by means of TCM.” It covers the basic theories of TCM, its diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, concepts of disease prevention and health preservation, and its unique philosophical perspectives. With an emphasis on academic depth and general accessibility, the course aims to help international students gain a deeper understanding of the TCM system and experience the cultural richness of TCM.

Since its launch, the course has served international undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in Chinese Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy at ZCMU. It has also been introduced at ZCMU Tunisia School and several Overseas TCM Centers. In 2022, it was recognized as a First-Class International Undergraduate Course of Zhejiang Province and, in 2025, was selected as one of the first “Outstanding Courses for National Conditions Education for International Students in China,” highlighting its role as a model in international medical education.

With its release on the Smart Education of China platform, and supported by the platform’s robust technology and global reach, the course is expected to further expand its international impact and provide high-quality, authoritative TCM education resources to learners worldwide. Looking ahead, ZCMU will continue to enhance and upgrade the course, actively contribute to global medical education and TCM culture dissemination, and cultivate medical talents with international vision and cultural competence.
